{"id":1348,"date":"2016-10-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/religious-bigotry-prompted-murder-in-iran\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:52:49","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:52:49","slug":"religious-bigotry-prompted-murder-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/religious-bigotry-prompted-murder-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious bigotry prompted murder in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/Farhand%20Amiri.jpg\" alt=\"Religious bigotry prompted murder in Iran \" \/><figcaption>Farhang Amiri, 63, was murdered outside his home on 26 September 2016 in the city of Yazd, Iran (photo: Baha&#8217;i World News Service)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Australian Baha\u2019is are outraged and deeply saddened at the murder of Farhang Amiri, a much-loved and widely admired resident of Yazd in Iran, spokesperson Natalie Mobini said today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reliable sources have now confirmed that religious bigotry was the chief motive for the killing of Mr Amiri, a member of the Baha\u2019i Faith.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that the suspects have admitted killing Mr Amiri, 63, repeatedly stabbing him in the chest with a knife outside his residence on 26 September 2016, one confirming his motive was that his victim was a Baha\u2019i.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mobini said the crime caused intense personal grief in Australia where Mr Amiri has relatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch an appalling crime is a consequence of the Iranian government\u2019s longstanding and systematic effort to incite hatred against its Baha\u2019i citizens\u201d, Dr Mobini said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iranian government must ensure that justice will take its course without interruptions due to religious affiliation,\u201d Dr Mobini said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iranian authorities need to put an end to the incitement, and publicly denounce violence and injustice against Baha\u2019is and other persecuted groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kindness and wisdom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Mobini said Mr Amiri was well known by his neighbours for his kindness, gentleness, wisdom and humility.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mobini said the authorities in Yazd and in Iran in general have been conducting a systematic campaign to encourage hatred and bigotry against Baha\u2019is, members of the biggest non-Muslim religious minority in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the administration of President Rouhani, more than 20,000 pieces of anti-Baha&#8217;i propaganda have been disseminated in the Iranian media.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the murder, there have been dozens of wrongful arrests and imprisonments of Baha&#8217;is in the city of Yazd alone, as well as scores of raids on Baha&#8217;is&#8217; residences and businesses, including the home of the children of Mr Amiri, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Successive Australian foreign ministers have condemned the persecution of Baha\u2019is in Iran, and Australia has been a consistent supporter of UN resolutions calling upon the government of that country to put an end to the persecution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bahai.org\/story\/1133\">Read more from the Baha&#8217;i International Community<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australian Baha\u2019is are outraged and deeply saddened at the murder of Farhang Amiri, a much-loved and widely admired resident of Yazd in Iran, spokesperson Natalie Mobini said today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1348","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
