{"id":1342,"date":"2015-12-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/bahais-welcome-australias-support-at-un\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:48:38","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:48:38","slug":"bahais-welcome-australias-support-at-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/bahais-welcome-australias-support-at-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Baha\u2019is welcome Australia\u2019s support at UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/UN%20headquater%20buildings.jpg\" alt=\"Baha\u2019is welcome Australia\u2019s support at UN\" \/><figcaption>United Nations Headquarters in New York (UN Photo\/Mark Garten)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community has welcomed the Australian government\u2019s support for a UN resolution expressing \u201cserious concern\u201d about religious discrimination and other human rights violations in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe deeply appreciate Australia\u2019s strong support for this resolution, which amplifies the international community\u2019s continuing concern at the human rights situation in Iran\u201d, said Natalie Mobini, spokesperson for the Australian Baha\u2019i Community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust last month, Iranian authorities arrested another 20 Baha\u2019is and closed at least 28 Baha\u2019i businesses. The Iranian government must be held to account for its blatant campaign of anti-Baha\u2019i persecution,\u201d Dr Mobini said.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution, which was passed by the UN General Assembly on Thursday 17 December, urged the Iranian government to release the seven Baha&#8217;i leaders who have been imprisoned since 2008, and \u201cto eliminate, in law and in practice, all forms of discrimination, including the closure of businesses, and other human rights violations against persons belonging to recognised and unrecognised religious minorities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution also expressed concern at other human rights violations including the frequent use of the death penalty, failure to uphold legal due process, restrictions on freedom of expression, and ongoing discrimination against women and ethnic minorities in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>It called upon the government &#8220;to translate the pledges made by the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran with respect to human rights concerns into concrete action that results in demonstrable improvements as soon as possible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Canada put the resolution forward and it was co-sponsored by 44 other countries, including Australia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ga\/search\/view_doc.asp?symbol=A\/C.3\/70\/L.45\">Download a copy of the resolution.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community has welcomed the Australian government\u2019s support for a UN resolution expressing \u201cserious concern\u201d about religious discrimination and other human rights violations in Iran.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
