{"id":1309,"date":"2014-06-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/elder-advocates-education-to-help-reconciliation\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:49:06","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:49:06","slug":"elder-advocates-education-to-help-reconciliation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/elder-advocates-education-to-help-reconciliation\/","title":{"rendered":"Elder advocates education to help reconciliation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/XO3A2109.JPG\" alt=\"Elder advocates education to help reconciliation\" \/><figcaption>(Left to right) Sara Peri, Jennifer Symonds, Millie Ingram, Josie Lacey, and Mona Forghani.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Aboriginal elder Aunty Millie Ingram stressed the importance of education as a transformative power to advance reconciliation in Australia when she addressed a reception following a service at the Sydney Baha\u2019i Temple.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best thing you can do is to be informed,\u201d said Ms Ingram, who spoke at the 1 June event, held to mark National Reconciliation Week.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ingram, from Sydney\u2019s inner west, spoke on the Week\u2019s theme \u201cLet\u2019s Walk the Talk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community has been a supporter of the Week event since the first one in 1996. At the heart of the Baha\u2019i teachings are the principles of the oneness of humanity and of unity in diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ingram encouraged more interest in Aboriginal news, speakers, films and plays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to change people\u2019s views about Aboriginal people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are over 200 nationalities in this country, and I regard you all as Australians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we are the first Australians, and yet we are so far behind. We should be respected, we should be honoured, and we should be acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made a lot of gains in the last forty year but we still have a long way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the reception, a public service took place in the Baha\u2019i Temple with readings the from Baha\u2019i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, and Jewish scriptures based on themes of unity and harmony, with intervals of music from the Baha\u2019i Temple choir.<\/p>\n<p>Special guests included the chair of Religions for Peace NSW, Josie Lacey, NSW Jewish Board of Deputies representative Jennifer Symonds, and Warringah Councillor Vanessa Moskal.
