UN Photo\/Mark Garten.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The role of Australia in co-sponsoring a successful United Nations resolution condemning serious human rights abuses in Iran has earned the gratitude of the Australian Baha\u2019i community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The resolution passed yesterday by the General Assembly expressed \u201cdeep concern\u201d at Iran\u2019s \u201cserious ongoing and recurring\u201d human rights violations, citing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Torture<\/li>\n<li>An increase in executions<\/li>\n<li>Widespread restrictions on freedom of expression<\/li>\n<li>Discrimination against minorities, including members of the Baha\u2019i Faith<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The General Assembly called upon Iran to stop such violations, to release prisoners of conscience and to open its doors to international human rights monitors.<\/p>\n<p>Last month Tanisha Hewanpola, First Secretary, Australian Mission to the United Nations, expressed the Government\u2019s concerns to the UN Third Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia condemns the wide-spread human rights abuses occurring in Iran, including the use of the death penalty, intimidation and arbitrary arrest of human rights defenders and political activists, violation of political and media freedoms, and unfair trials,\u201d she said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia is deeply concerned by policies and practices that discriminate against ethnic and religious minorities, including Arab Iranians, Baha\u2019is and religious converts, as well as women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to urge Iran to engage in a transparent manner with UN human rights mechanisms, including with the Special Rapporteur on Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nCruel and systematic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australian Baha\u2019i Community spokesperson Natalie Mobini said Australian Baha\u2019is are extremely concerned at the widespread abuses, including \u201cthe cruel, systematic and entirely unjustified attacks on the Baha\u2019is of Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are more than 100 Baha\u2019is in prison for their faith, and many more are awaiting trial,\u201d Dr Mobini said, adding that some were relatives of Australian Baha\u2019is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven innocent Baha\u2019i leaders, jailed since 2008, remain imprisoned in appalling conditions, as are Baha\u2019i educators who provided secular education to young people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung Baha\u2019is are banned from universities, businesses are being shut down, cemeteries are being desecrated and the homes of ordinary families are subjected to violent raids, confiscation of belongings and the arrest of their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIranian officials deny these abuses are occurring but the rest of the world has not accepted this patent falsehood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is reassuring and heart-warming to see the Australian Government standing up against the ongoing and intensifying repression of so many people and groups in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bahai.org\/story\/935\">Read the story from <em>Baha&#8217;i World News Service<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The role of Australia in co-sponsoring a successful United Nations resolution condemning serious human rights abuses in Iran has earned the gratitude of the Australian Baha\u2019i community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
