{"id":1260,"date":"2012-05-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/indigenous-speakers-address-reception-for-national-reconciliation-week\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:49:56","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:49:56","slug":"indigenous-speakers-address-reception-for-national-reconciliation-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/indigenous-speakers-address-reception-for-national-reconciliation-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous speakers address reception for National Reconciliation Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/27%20may%202012.jpg\" alt=\"Indigenous speakers address reception for National Reconciliation Week\" \/><figcaption>Cr Dominic Wy Kanak and Ms Bettina King<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Indigenous speakers addressed a reception following a National Reconciliation Week service at the Baha\u2019i Temple in Sydney on 27 May.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An indigenous member of the Baha\u2019i community, Bettina King, opened the reception on behalf of the Australian Baha\u2019i Community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1993 we were among the faith communities that started the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation, which was expanded in 1996 to become the National Reconciliation week,\u201d said Ms King, a Narrungga woman from the Yorke Penninsula on her mother\u2019s side and a Wardaman from the Northern Territory on her father\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>As chair of the reception, Ms King introduced keynote speaker, Dominic Wy Kanak a board member for the New South Wales Reconciliation Council and a Waverley City Councillor.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Wy Kanak said the Reconciliation Council was working to help achieve a \u201creconciled Australia\u201d and that reconciliation had as many meanings as the number of people gathered before him.<\/p>\n<p>Aspirations aligned to actions for reconciliation would help achieve a better society, one with greater respect and acknowledgement for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, said Cr Wy Kanak, a Torres Strait Islander.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Wy Kanak said indigenous people had often banded together in response to the challenging conditions they have had to endure.<\/p>\n<p>He also spoke about respecting the natural environment and the obligation of each human being to respect the country.<\/p>\n<p>Following his presentation, participants in the forum discussed topics including deaths in custody, relationships with the police, the need for education and cultural awareness, and community responses aimed at overcoming alcohol use.<\/p>\n<p>In summing up, Ms King said how positive it is that the Baha\u2019i community are having a dialogue about reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most important factors of Cr Wy Kanak\u2019s presentation was about how individuals can take action on a local level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCr Wy Kanak showed us information from ANTaR (Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation) and Reconciliation Australia that provides ideas on how people can support reconciliation and social change for indigenous Australians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The service in the Temple included prayers and readings, as well as chanting from scripture by the Temple choir.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.10151014477840883.493841.351303140882&amp;type=3\">See more photos<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indigenous speakers addressed a reception following a National Reconciliation Week service at the Baha\u2019i Temple in Sydney on 27 May.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1260","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
