{"id":1185,"date":"2010-06-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/call-for-release-as-trial-looms\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:48:38","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:48:38","slug":"call-for-release-as-trial-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/call-for-release-as-trial-looms\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for release as trial looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/friends%20in%20iran.jpg\" alt=\"Call for release as trial looms\" \/><figcaption>The seven Baha&#8217;i leaders imprisoned in Iran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Baha&#8217;i World News Service<\/p>\n<p>Seven Baha&#8217;i leaders who have been imprisoned in Iran for more than two years are set to face their fourth court appearance on 12 June.<\/p>\n<p>The date coincides with the anniversary of last year&#8217;s presidential election in Iran, as well as a global day of action aimed at calling attention to human rights abuses in that country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn 12 June the eyes of the world will be on Iran,\u201d said Australian Baha\u2019i Community spokesperson Tessa Scrine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing less than a fair and open trial that upholds international legal standards will stand up to world scrutiny,\u201d Ms Scrine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a shred of evidence was presented against the seven in three previous hearings this year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite this, they remain crammed into two small, putrid cells where they sleep on blankets on a cement floor and are allowed fresh air for only two hours a week,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese seven should be released unconditionally, or at the very least be freed on bail pending a fair and open trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour of the prisoners have close relatives who are members of the Australian Baha\u2019i Community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Australian Government<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four months ago, Australian diplomats spoke out at the United Nations about the treatment of the seven Baha\u2019is, the latest of the repeated official expressions of concern by Australian Government representatives over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>The seven defendants are Fariba Kamalabadi, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naeimi, Saeid Rezaie, Mahvash Sabet, Behrouz Tavakkoli, and Vahid Tizfahm.<\/p>\n<p>Before their imprisonment, they attended to the spiritual and social needs of Iran&#8217;s Baha&#8217;i community, which numbers more than 300,000.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Sabet was arrested on 5 March 2008 and the others on 14 May 2008.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently some 38 Baha&#8217;is in detention in various cities in Iran due to their Faith.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seven Baha&#8217;i leaders who have been imprisoned in Iran for more than two years are set to face their fourth court appearance on 12 June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
