{"id":1184,"date":"2010-06-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/australian-family-members-anxious-about-trial\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:47:54","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:47:54","slug":"australian-family-members-anxious-about-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/australian-family-members-anxious-about-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian family members anxious about trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/friends%20in%20iran.jpg\" alt=\"Australian family members anxious about trial\" \/><figcaption>The seven Baha&#8217;i leaders imprisoned in Iran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Baha&#8217;i World News Service<\/p>\n<p>Roya Kamalabadi of Melbourne and Amin Tavakoli of Adelaide face more days of anxiety this week.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Kamalabadi, a mature-age pharmacy student, is waiting to learn the fate of her sister, Fariba, who will face trial in Branch 28 of Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Court in Tehran this Saturday, 12 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister, Fariba is an angel, who has dedicated her entire life to the education and service of her fellow countrymen &#8212; her only crime is serving humanity and promoting love, unity, and fellowship among friends and foe,\u201d Mrs Kamalabadi said recently.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tavakoli, a businessman, is in a similar position to Roya Kamalabadi. His brother, Behrouz, will appear in court alongside Fariba Kamalabadi and five other long-imprisoned, innocent Baha\u2019i leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I could have one wish, it would be to see him one more time,\u201d Mr Tavakoli said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would hug him and put my ear to his chest and listen to the melody of his heart, a heart that plays the melody of love \u2013 love of God, love of humanity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the other imprisoned Baha\u2019i leaders also have relatives in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>For more than two years the seven have been incarcerated in appalling conditions in Tehran\u2019s notorious Evin Prison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accusations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the first three sessions of the trial on 12 January, 7 February and 12 April this year, no evidence was presented to support grave charges of espionage, propaganda activities against the Islamic order, acting against the security of the country, and \u201cspreading corruption on earth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The court date this week coincides with the anniversary of last year\u2019s controversial presidential election, as well as a global day of action aimed at calling attention to human rights abuses in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Baha\u2019i Community spokesperson Tessa Scrine said: \u201cAt the very least, the seven should be released on bail pending a prompt, fair and open trial that upholds international legal standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran should know that its actions against these seven innocent people are being watched by the rest of the world\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Australia speaks out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australian diplomats recently spoke out at the United Nations, the latest of the repeated official expressions of concern for the seven leaders by Australian Government representatives over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>Resolutions of the Australian Federal Parliament and State Parliaments have called for their immediate release as have individual MPs from both major parties.<\/p>\n<p>The seven defendants are Mrs Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr Saeid Rezaie, Mrs Mahvash Sabet, Mr Behrouz Tavakkoli, Mr Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr Afif Naeimi, and Mr Vahid Tizfahm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Roya Kamalabadi of Melbourne and Amin Tavakoli of Adelaide face more days of anxiety this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1184","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
