{"id":1175,"date":"2008-01-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-31T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/decision-of-egyptian-court-welcomed\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:49:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:49:04","slug":"decision-of-egyptian-court-welcomed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/decision-of-egyptian-court-welcomed\/","title":{"rendered":"Decision of Egyptian Court Welcomed"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/egypt%20map%20high%20res.jpg\" alt=\"Decision of Egyptian Court Welcomed\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>A courtroom decision in Egypt opens the door to the restoration of full rights of citizenship for members of the Baha\u2019i Faith there, a spokesperson for the Australian Baha\u2019i community, Natalie Mobini-Kesheh, said today.<\/p>\n<p>The Court of Administrative Justice in Cairo this week ruled that Baha&#8217;is could fill out vital official documents without being required to falsely declare membership of one of three state-accepted religions, Islam, Christianity or Judaism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the Egyptian government to quickly implement the court&#8217;s decision and allow Baha&#8217;is once again to enjoy the full rights of citizenship to which they are entitled,\u201d Dr Mobini-Kesheh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis decision is a victory for religious freedom,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe previous policy was obviously at odds with international law and common sense,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be watching closely to see how the decision is implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Baha\u2019i Faith had recently not been permitted to leave the religious affiliation field blank on official documents, including the application form for the all-important national ID card.<\/p>\n<p>The only option given the Baha\u2019is was to lie about their religious affiliation, itself a punishable offence in Egypt and something that Baha\u2019is will not do.<\/p>\n<p>Without national identify cards, Baha\u2019is are deprived of a wide range of citizenship rights, such as access to employment, education, medical and financial services, and marriage and birth certificates.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers representing Baha\u2019is in cases seeking a change to the policy said their clients were willing to settle for cards or documents on which the religious affiliation field is left blank or filled in, perhaps, as &#8220;other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This solution, accepted this week by the Court of Administrative Justice, distinguishes these two cases from a lawsuit rejected by the Supreme Administrative Court of Egypt last year.<\/p>\n<p>That court overruled a decision by a lower court that upheld the right of Baha&#8217;is to have their religion identified as Baha\u2019i on government documents.<\/p>\n<p>Read a full report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.bahai.org\/story\/600\">Baha\u2019i World News Service<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A courtroom decision in Egypt opens the door to the restoration of full rights of citizenship for members of the Baha\u2019i Faith there, a spokesperson for the Australian Baha\u2019i community, Natalie Mobini-Kesheh, said today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1175","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
