The Australian Baha\u2019i Community has welcomed today\u2019s United Nations resolution that criticised \u201cincreasing discrimination against Baha\u2019is\u201d in Iran.<\/p>\n

Australia was one of more than 40 countries that co-sponsored the General Assembly resolution which expressed \u201cdeep concern at serious human rights violations in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased that the world\u2019s most representative body has once again spoken out about the shameful and illegal abuses of human rights being carried out in Iran,\u201d said an Australian Baha\u2019i spokesperson, Tessa Scrine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that the Iranian government will listen to the international community and stop systematically violating the human rights of its own people,\u201d Ms Scrine said.<\/p>\n

The resolution criticised “increasing discrimination” by Iran against Baha’is, Christians, Jews, Sufis, Sunni Muslims, and other minorities, its use of torture, the high incidence of executions, and the “violent repression” of women.<\/p>\n
