{"id":1134,"date":"2009-01-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/outrage-as-six-more-bahais-arrested-in-iran\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:52:06","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:52:06","slug":"outrage-as-six-more-bahais-arrested-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/outrage-as-six-more-bahais-arrested-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Outrage as six more Baha&apos;is arrested in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/iran_map.jpg\" alt=\"Outrage as six more Bahais arrested in Iran\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community has expressed its outrage at the rounding up and incarceration of six more Baha\u2019is in Iran this week.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports received from Iran, the six were arrested after government agents raided the homes of at least 11 Baha\u2019is.<\/p>\n<p>One of the arrest<\/p>\n<p>ed is Jinous Sobhani, who worked in a human rights organisation founded by Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi that was shut by Iranian authorities last month.<\/p>\n<p>The arrests come almost eight months to the day since dawn raids picked up members of the national coordinating committee of the Baha\u2019is of Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The seven members of that committee have been imprisoned without charge or access to lawyers ever since.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arrests this week are outrageous,\u201d Australian Baha\u2019i Community spokesperson, Natalie Mobini said today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as we know, all of these people were arrested because they are Baha\u2019is,\u201d Dr Mobini said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UN condemnation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arrests follow the strong condemnation by the United Nations General Assembly, just one month ago, of the persecution of the Baha\u2019is and other human rights breaches in Iran,\u201d Dr Mobini said today.<\/p>\n<p>Australia was one of more than 40 countries that co-sponsored the General Assembly resolution on 19 December 2008 which condemned \u201cincreasing discrimination\u201d by Iran against Baha\u2019is, Christians, Jews, Sufis, Sunni Muslims, and other minorities, its use of torture, the high incidence of executions, and the \u201cviolent repression\u201d of women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chilling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe link between one of the Baha\u2019is arrested this week and the work of Nobel Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi is a chilling indication that the Iranian Government is intent on stifling any expression of human rights in general and religious freedom in particular,\u201d Dr Mobini said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is simply religious persecution of the most ominous kind,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is well known that the Baha\u2019is of Iran, who comprise that country\u2019s biggest religious minority, are law-abiding and non-political,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least two of some 30 Baha\u2019is now in prison in Iran have close relatives in the Australian Baha\u2019i community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read a full report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.bahai.org\/story\/688\">Baha&#8217;i World News Service<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community has expressed its outrage at the rounding up and incarceration of six more Baha\u2019is in Iran this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1134","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
