{"id":1120,"date":"2009-08-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/trial-date-set-as-due-process-ignored\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:54:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:54:13","slug":"trial-date-set-as-due-process-ignored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/trial-date-set-as-due-process-ignored\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial date set as due process ignored"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/friends%20in%20iran.jpg\" alt=\"Trial date set as due process ignored\" \/><figcaption>The seven arrested Baha&#8217;i leaders in Iran: Standing L to R: Fariba Kamalabadi, Vahid Tizfahm, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naemi, and Mahvash Sabet Seated L to R: Behrouz Tavakkoli and Saeid Rezaie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Iranian judicial officials have reportedly set 18 August as the trial date for seven jailed Baha\u2019i leaders, despite one of their lawyers being recently imprisoned and the other out of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the accused have close family members in Australia where the Government and the Federal Parliament have publicly called for the release of the seven leaders and expressed their serious concerns about the situation of the Baha\u2019is in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community is alarmed at the continual disregard for due process and has no confidence that any trial will be fair, a spokesperson, Tessa Scrine, said today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leaders have been allowed no access to lawyers, only minimal contact with family members, and they have been refused bail,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw how Iran\u2019s judges flouted the most basic internationally accepted standards of jurisprudence during the recent trial of the Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi,\u201d Ms Scrine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow the world is watching show trials of people arrested in the post-election turmoil in Iran, also without due process and with \u2018confessions\u2019 clearly extracted by torture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of injustice has been inflicted on Iranian Baha\u2019is for more than 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Scrine said a previous trial date, 11 July, came and went without any proceedings, so there could be no certainty about what will happen next Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA writ giving 18 August as the trial date was addressed to one of lawyers for the Baha\u2019is, Abdolfattah Soltani, who is a principal of the Tehran-based Defenders of Human Rights Centre.
