{"id":1111,"date":"2010-01-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/trial-date-looks-set-for-iranian-bahai-leaders\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:54:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:54:13","slug":"trial-date-looks-set-for-iranian-bahai-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/trial-date-looks-set-for-iranian-bahai-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial date looks set for Iranian Baha&apos;i leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/friends%20in%20iran.jpg\" alt=\"Trial date looks set for Iranian Bahai leaders\" \/><figcaption>The seven arrested Baha&#8217;i leaders in Iran: Standing L to R: Fariba Kamalabadi, Vahid Tizfahm, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naemi, and Mahvash Sabet Seated L to R: Behrouz Tavakkoli and Saeid Rezaie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The lawyers for seven imprisoned Baha\u2019i leaders in Iran have been told by authorities that the next session of their clients&#8217; trial is scheduled for 7 February.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Australian Baha\u2019i Community, Tessa Scrine, said today that the world will be closely watching when the trial resumes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an international outcry at the unfair first session on 12 January in Tehran when defence lawyers were obstructed and neutral observers excluded from the courtroom,\u201d Ms Scrine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe failure of the authorities to follow the internationally-accepted rules for fair trials will mean a close scrutiny of the procedures and outcomes of the next session,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Government together with counterparts throughout the world have called for the trial to be fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the Iranian Government (to ensure) that any trial be fair and transparent and conducted in accordance with Iran\u2019s international obligations,\u201d a spokesperson for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said last week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charges rejected<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Baha\u2019i International Community, Diane Alai, said today that little was known of what happened in the court on 12 January except that the seven innocent Baha\u2019is firmly rejected all the charges against them.<\/p>\n<p>The charges against the seven, according to accounts in government-sponsored news media, were: espionage, &#8220;propaganda activities against the Islamic order,&#8221; the establishment of an &#8220;illegal administration,&#8221; cooperation with Israel, sending secret documents outside the country, acting against the security of the country, and &#8220;corruption on earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relatives in Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four of the seven defendants, Mrs Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr Saeid Rezaie, Mrs Mahvash Sabet, and Mr Behrouz Tavakkoli, have close relatives in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The other defendants are Mr Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr Afif Naeimi, and Mr Vahid Tizfahm.<\/p>\n<p>All but one of the group were arrested on 14 May 2008 at their homes in Tehran. Mrs Sabet was arrested on 5 March 2008 while in Mashhad.
