{"id":1110,"date":"2010-02-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/grave-concerns-prompt-special-prayers\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:49:54","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:49:54","slug":"grave-concerns-prompt-special-prayers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/grave-concerns-prompt-special-prayers\/","title":{"rendered":"Grave concerns prompt special prayers"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/75th%20anniversary%20temple%20service.jpg\" alt=\"Grave concerns prompt special prayers\" \/><figcaption>A prayer service for the seven Baha&#8217;i leaders on trial in Iran will be held at the Baha&#8217;i House of Worship in Ingleside, Sydney, at 11.00 am on Sunday 7 February.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Baha\u2019is throughout Australia will hold public devotional gatherings this Sunday, 7 February 2010, to pray for seven long-imprisoned Baha\u2019i leaders whose trial is scheduled to resume in Iran on that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Australian Baha\u2019i Community has grave fears for the safety of the seven\u201d, said spokesperson Tessa Scrine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese innocent Baha\u2019is have been in jail for nearly two years and are facing numerous false charges, including espionage and conspiracy,\u201d Ms Scrine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose relatives of four of the accused live in Australia, and they are understandably very anxious about the outcome of the trial,\u201d Ms Scrine said.<\/p>\n<p>Three of those relatives will address a public inter-faith prayer gathering for the seven at the NSW State Parliament at 11am on Tuesday, 9 February 2010. Guest speaker will be the president of the International Commission of Jurists Australia, the Hon. John Dowd AO QC.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Scrine said the seven Baha\u2019i leaders have committed no crime but are suffering blatant religious persecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll those who know Baha\u2019is throughout the world, including the Iranian authorities, are well aware that we are called upon by our Faith to be law-abiding and not to engage in partisan politics,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>False evidence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ms Scrine said Baha\u2019is are worried that charges against 10 other Baha&#8217;is arrested earlier this month in Iran will be used to create false evidence against the seven.<\/p>\n<p>One of the ten was among 16 individuals who faced trial on 30 January, apparently accused of participating in the Ashura demonstrations on 27 December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat trial was a violation of all internationally accepted standards of legal due process,\u201d said Ms Scrine<\/p>\n<p>(For a report on that trial, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bahai.org\/story\/753\">Baha\u2019i World News Service<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Australian Government<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ms Scrine said Australian Baha\u2019is welcome the support of the Australian Government and Federal and State Parliaments, which have joined with their counterparts in many other countries in calling for Iran to abide by its human rights obligations and to release the seven Baha\u2019i leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a spokesperson for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said: \u201cWe urge the Iranian Government (to ensure) that any trial be fair and transparent and conducted in accordance with Iran\u2019s international obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>First session<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first session of the trial of the seven was held on 12 January 2010 and was adjourned after charges were read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exclusion of family members and neutral observers as well as the obstruction of defence lawyers on 12 January breached internationally-accepted legal standards,\u201d Ms Scrine said.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports in government-sponsored news media, the seven have been charged with: espionage, propaganda activities against the Islamic order, the establishment of an illegal administration, cooperation with Israel, sending secret documents outside the country, acting against the security of the country, and corruption on earth.<\/p>\n<p>In court, the defendants explicitly denied all of these charges.<\/p>\n<p>The seven leaders are Mrs Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr Afif Naeimi, Mr Saeid Rezaie, Mrs Mahvash Sabet, Mr Behrouz Tavakkoli, and Mr Vahid Tizfahm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baha\u2019is throughout Australia will hold public devotional gatherings this Sunday, 7 February 2010, to pray for seven long-imprisoned Baha\u2019i leaders whose trial is scheduled to resume in Iran on that day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1110","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases","category-uncategorised"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.2 -
