{"id":1107,"date":"2010-02-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/news\/australian-government-speaks-out-on-bahais\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T04:47:54","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:47:54","slug":"australian-government-speaks-out-on-bahais","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/australian-government-speaks-out-on-bahais\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Government speaks out on Baha&apos;is"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/Portals\/0\/gary_quinlan.jpg\" alt=\"Australian Government speaks out on Bahais\" \/><figcaption>Australian Ambassador to the United Nations, Gary Quinlan, expressed Australia&#8217;s concern over Iran&#8217;s discrimination against minorities such as the Baha&#8217;is.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Australian Government has spoken out about the treatment of seven wrongfully-imprisoned Baha\u2019i leaders in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are particularly concerned at the situation of seven leaders of the Baha\u2019i community who have been detained since 2008, whose trials began recently,\u201d Australia\u2019s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations (Geneva), Miranda Brown, said on 15 February 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the UN Human Rights Council\u2019s Universal Periodic Review of Iran, Ms Brown said Australia was concerned by reports of the treatment of minority ethnic and religious communities in Iran and particularly the treatment of Baha\u2019is. The full statement can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneva.mission.gov.au\/gene\/statment79.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In its recommendations, the Australian Government called on Iran to \u201censure the trials of seven Baha\u2019is are fair and transparent and conducted in accordance with international standards, and that Iran amend all legislation which discriminates against minority groups\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Australia was one of many countries at the 15 February session of the UN Human Rights Council to call on Iran to respect the human rights of Baha\u2019is and other oppressed people in Iran. Preliminary sessions of their trial, closed to independent observers and family members, were held before a Revolutionary Court on 12 January and 7 February 2010. No date has been given for any future session.<\/p>\n<p>The seven have strongly denied all charges which include espionage, propaganda activities against the Islamic order, acting against the security of the country, and spreading corruption on earth.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s statement to the UN Human Rights Council was in line with its role in co-sponsoring the December 2009 United Nations General Assembly resolution on the human rights situation in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>That resolution expressed concern over \u201cattacks on Baha\u2019is and their faith in State-sponsored media, increasing evidence of efforts by the State to identify, monitor and arbitrarily detain Baha\u2019is, preventing members of the Baha\u2019i Faith from attending university and from sustaining themselves economically\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia\u2019s statement on human rights at the UN Third Committee, Ambassador Gary Quinlan expressed Australia\u2019s concern over \u201cdiscrimination against minorities such as the Baha\u2019is\u201d in Iran.
