It arose out of the matrix of Islam in Iran, much as Christianity emerged from the matrix of Judaism. It is not a sect or denomination of Islam or any other religion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terminology:<\/strong> A member is called a Baha\u2019i (plural: Baha\u2019is). It is also correct to say that someone is a \u201cmember of the Baha\u2019i Faith,\u201d a \u201cfollower of the Baha\u2019i Faith,\u201d a \u201cfollower of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah,\u201d or a member of the Baha\u2019i community of a given locality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pronunciation guide:<\/strong><br \/>\nBaha\u2019i: Ba-HIGH<br \/>\nBaha\u2019u\u2019llah: Ba-ha-ul-LAH<br \/>\nBab: Barb<br \/>\n\u2018Abdu\u2019l-Baha: Abdul ba-HAH<\/p>\n<p><strong>Founder of the Baha\u2019i Faith:<\/strong> Baha\u2019u\u2019llah \u2013 the name is Arabic for \u201cGlory of God\u201d \u2013 was born in 1817 in Tehran, Iran, and passed away in 1892 in Acre in the Holy Land. The coming of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah was announced by the Bab (1819-1850), who is also considered by Baha\u2019is to be a divine Messenger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year of founding:<\/strong> 1844. The first announcement by the Bab of the new religion came in 1844.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year of arrival in Australia:<\/strong> 1920. The Baha\u2019i Faith was introduced to Australia in 1920 by John Henry Hyde Dunn and Clara Dunn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Administration:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internationally: The Universal House of Justice, a nine-member institution elected every five years with its seat at the Baha\u2019i World Centre in Haifa, Israel.<\/li>\n<li>Nationally: The National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha\u2019is of Australia, a nine-member body elected annually, oversees the affairs of the Baha\u2019i Faith in Australia.<\/li>\n<li>Locally: 200 annually elected Local Spiritual Assemblies oversee local affairs throughout Australia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Elections are conducted according to guidelines that prohibit nominations and campaigning, and instead require those casting ballots to vote, with a prayerful attitude, for individuals \u201cof selfless devotion, of a well-trained mind, of recognised ability and mature experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Decision making:<\/strong> Contention is avoided in favour of a consensus decision making process called consultation. There is no clergy. There are no rituals, robes or special clothing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funds:<\/strong> Baha\u2019i activities and properties are supported by the voluntary contributions of registered Baha\u2019is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statistics:<\/strong><br \/>\nNumber of Baha\u2019is in the world: more than 5 million<br \/>\nNumber of Baha\u2019is in Australia: 20,000<br \/>\nNumber of Local Spiritual Assemblies in Australia: 200<br \/>\nNumber of Baha\u2019i communities in Australia: 400<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description of the religion and key beliefs:\u00a0<\/strong>The Baha\u2019i Faith is a modern, independent, monotheistic religion established in virtually every country of the world. A central theme of the Baha&#8217;i Faith is that humanity is one family, a single people inhabiting the planet Earth, bound together in a common destiny under one God. Baha\u2019is believe that the world\u2019s major religions represent unfolding chapters in God\u2019s teachings for humankind, and that the writings of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah represent God\u2019s guidance for this age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Baha\u2019i principles:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>equality of women and men<\/li>\n<li>abolition of extremes of poverty and wealth<\/li>\n<li>elimination of all forms of prejudice<\/li>\n<li>equal standard of human rights for all people<\/li>\n<li>harmony of science and religion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some Baha\u2019i laws:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>strict obedience to the laws of the land<\/li>\n<li>no participation in partisan politics<\/li>\n<li>encouragement of community and religious harmony<\/li>\n<li>prohibition on using alcohol and other mind-altering drugs<\/li>\n<li>prohibition on backbiting (gossip)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Daily life:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Daily prayer<\/li>\n<li>Fasting by adults for 19 days in March from sunrise to sunset.<\/li>\n<li>Meeting regularly at the Nineteen Day Feast (the term refers to a spiritual \u201cfeast\u201d of prayers, consultation and fellowship).
