#009999; line-height: 44px; margin: 0px auto 20px!important; font-size: 38px!important;\">Role of media in society<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>The Australian Baha\u2019i Community appreciates that the media, in all its forms, is a powerful force that shapes public perception, social discourse and how society comes to understand itself.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by a vision for a more peaceful, just and harmonious society, we seek to advance thought about the media\u2019s role in strengthening our social ties and developing its capacity to help inform and educate, overcome misconceptions and prejudice, serve social justice in response to oppression and contribute to social progress.<\/p>\n<div class=\"no-padding green-border\">\n<p><em>In His Writings, Baha\u2019u\u2019llah, the Prophet-Founder of the Baha\u2019i Faith, refers to the media as an \u201camazing and potent phenomenon\u201d describing it as a \u201cmirror endowed with hearing, sight and speech.\u201d He urged journalists to \u201cinquire into situations as much as possible and ascertain the facts, then set them down in writing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h4 style=\"color: #009999;\">Contributing to the national conversation<\/h4>\n<p style=\"color: #009999;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Given that journalism is a public good and guided the principles of the Baha\u2019i Faith, we seek to engage with individuals, communities and social institutions in a spirit of cooperation and reciprocity to advance the national conversation on the role of the media in our society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #009999;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Our current themes focus on the media\u2019s role in strengthening social cohesion and inclusion, the ethics and values that guide quality journalism, and the impact of media content on individuals and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #009999;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In response to the <\/span><em style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Senate Inquiry into the state of media diversity, independence and reliability in Australia<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">, the Australian Baha\u2019i Community offered a submission. It can be read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bahai.org.au\/index.php\/what-bahais-do\/participating-in-public-discourse\/submission-on-the-state-of-media-diversity-independence-and-reliability-on-behalf-of-the-australian-bahai-community\/\">here<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h4 style=\"color: #009999;\">Explainer Webinar<\/h4>\n<p>On 1 April 2021, the Australian Baha&#8217;i Community hosted an explainer webinar looking at the intersection of technology, communications and the media.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on the February 2021 Facebook news ban as a springboard for the deeper conversation on the role of the media in society, together with those at the forefront of experience, we explored:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What led to the news ban, including immediate implications and observations<\/li>\n<li>The features of a fair and just media ecosystem that serves news producers and news consumers alike<\/li>\n<li>Advice for Australians seeking to navigate news content and online technologies thoughtfully and conscientiously<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1fBFAfPA-A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"color: #009999;\">\u2018Reimagining Media\u2019 series<\/h4>\n<p>Alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uts.edu.au\/research\/centre-media-transition\">Centre for Media Transition<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstdraftnews.org\/\">First Draft<\/a>, we have created a series of discussion spaces designed to facilitate dialogue and reflection for journalists and media practitioners.
